International Freedom Awards 20th Anniversary

by Paige Taylor on 10/3 | Posted in: Community, Guest Blogger

Do you need something to be a part of in Memphis, TN next month? Well, here is an event you may enjoy! The 2011 Freedom Awards will be taking place this year in Memphis’ own Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on November 12. The occasion will mark the 20th anniversary for the annual celebration at the National Civil Rights Museum.

The Awards are the largest fundraiser put on by the museum, taking place every fall. The awards show was developed to help honor individuals who make a significant contribution and impact on civil rights. Honorees are also recognized annually for their commitments and contributions both in the past and present times.

The freedom awards banquet is one of the largest culturally significant events in Memphis as it serves to bring together the community with leaders, entertainers and celebrities. The Freedom Awards also contain a public forum event in which the spotlight is shined on topics of discussion such as area youth development with the honorees and other important civil rights figures. As of right now, the honorees have yet to be named for the November fundraiser.

The Freedom Awards are highlighted by honoring three key members with the International award, the National Award and the Legacy Award. Also, six Memphis youths are honored with the Keepers of the Dream Award, which recognizes leadership, courage, compassion and service within the local community.

Last year’s ceremonies were highlighted by honorees Dr. Wangari Maathai, Dr. Dorothy Cotton and Eva Longoria Parker. The theme of the 2010 ceremonies was “In a Sister’s Hands” as all three of the main honorees were female. The three women were honored for their work in Environmental and Human Rights, Civil rights and Social Change, as well as Philanthropy and Humanitarian efforts.

This year’s sponsors will include major help from Nike, Fed Ex and First Tennessee Foundation, a local bank and checking company. Other sponsorships will come from International Paper, a major office and school supplier, as well as the Hyde Family Foundations, who assist with community work and development of Memphis area apartments, housing and church efforts.

The annual celebration will be open to the public and will also be free of charge. However, the ceremony is limited with tickets, as there are usually about 4000 attendees in total, with 3,000 students. The ceremony will be a black tie occasion with both reserved tickets for individuals, as well as corporate sponsorship tables in an effort to build fundraising efforts.
